Why Its On The List
Wentworth Mansion feels like the setting of Clue, with grand rooms, antique details, and that old-world Charleston atmosphere you don’t find many places anymore. It’s one of the best true historic stays in the city, but somehow still feels like a complete escape even though you’re right in the center of downtown. The staff are part of the experience here, and if you ask, they’ll happily point out the design details and history of the house, which makes the stay even more memorable. This is the place to book when you want the full Charleston experience, history, romance, and a stay that actually feels special.
The Story
Built in 1886 by wealthy cotton merchant Francis Silas Rodgers as a private home for his family, the mansion was one of the grandest residences in Charleston, with hand-carved woodwork, stained glass, marble fireplaces, and soaring ceilings that still define the property today. In the early 1900s the home became the headquarters for Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company before eventually falling into disrepair, and was later carefully restored under new ownership dedicated to preserving its history and turning it into the intimate hotel it is today. It’s now one of the few places in the city where you can stay in a true historic mansion rather than a modern hotel made to look like one, and the whole experience feels more like being a guest in someone’s home.

A List Approaced Perfect Day
Wake up early and start with a full Southern breakfast, then take a few minutes to walk the gardens and appreciate the house before the day really starts. Plan one of the mansion’s exclusive experiences, like riding through Charleston in a vintage Model A Ford or booking one of their private outings, which makes the stay feel more like stepping into the city’s history than just visiting it. After some adventure, head next door to Woodhouse Spa, then spend the afternoon leaning into the slower pace with tea and time in one of the mansion’s many lounge spaces. In the evening, get dressed for dinner at Circa 1886, then end the night back in your room by the fireplace with a glass of port or sherry, fully committing to the mansion experience.
