Why Its On The List
Emeline makes the list for its aesthetic alone. The whole space feels curated but still comfortable, with warm textures, vintage touches, and little details you notice the longer you stay, like the Italian language audio playing softly in the bathrooms. It feels stylish without trying too hard, and the kind of place you want to spend time in even if you’re not staying there.
The Story
The building dates back to 1852, when it was originally home to a mercantile and provisions company supplying goods to ships, hotels, and restaurants around Charleston. The hotel’s name and details throughout the property nod to that history, including Clerks Coffee, a reference to the shop clerks who once worked here. When the space was reimagined into a hotel, the design kept that sense of place with locally inspired materials, collected objects, and curated details that make it feel more like a well-traveled home than a traditional hotel.

A List Approaced Perfect Day
Today is all about maximizing restaurants. Start the morning at Clerks with a matcha, then rent a bike and ride along the waterfront and through the Battery so you can feel like you earned what’s coming next. Split a pizza at Frannie & the Fox in the courtyard, stop into The Keep, the lobby boutique, to browse local goods, then walk the French Quarter to make room for dinner. Freshen up back at the hotel, check out happy hour at The Den or cash in your tokens at Little Palm, and end the night with a proper seafood dinner at Hank’s.
