Why Its On The List

Set along Marion Square, just steps from Rainbow Row, The Dewberry always feels like stepping into a more metropolitan side of Charleston. The design is sleek and modern but still warm and welcoming, giving it a polished feel without losing the Southern charm the city is known for. It’s the hotel I recommend when someone wants Charleston, but with a little more edge.

The Story

Originally built in the 1960s as a federal office building, the structure was nearly demolished before Charleston developer and former NFL player John Dewberry bought the property with plans to restore it. Working with Brooklyn-based design studio Workstead, he kept the mid-century exterior intact and brought in warm, Southern-inspired details like terrazzo floors, brass fixtures, woven cane seating, linen, and hand waxed canvas, materials you will notice throughout the lobby, bar, and guest rooms. It’s that mix of modern architecture and Southern warmth that makes the hotel feel so special every time you walk in.
